Early College, Dual Enrollment and Career & Technical Education

College Kick Off Information

Shiawassee Early College Program participants are required to complete a self-paced online college preparation course and attend one of the 3.5 hour College Kick Off meetings during the summer prior to starting grade 11.  Registration for the College Kick Off meeting is included with the application.  Students have the option of; July 27, July 28, July 29, August 3, August 4, August 11 or August 12, from 9am - 12:30pm. The summer online course will be available June 10 with completion required by August 12.  Students will be required to complete 70% of the course which will take about 4-5 hours.  Emails will be sent to all students and parents with more information in June when the course is open in Google Classroom.

Effective December 1st 2021, students attending on-campus are required to have the COVID-19 vaccine or file for an exemption. If approved for exemption weekly testing is required. Online and online-live students are not required to be vaccinated. 

Our dual enrollment program with Baker College offers opportunities in Career & Technical Education, dual enrollment and early college paths towards certificates and associate degrees.  The delivery of instruction varies from closed courses with only students attending public school in Shiawassee County, 16 week online courses with high school students from across Michigan, Owosso campus classes with the general college population and 8 week accelerated online options. Our dual enrollment program with Mott Community College focuses on general education credits towards completing the Michigan Transfer Agreement.  Courses are offered in hybrid or online format. Here is a list of the recommended courses for Mott. 

CTE opportunity in Culinary Arts:  We also have a 3-year early college culinary program where students earn college credits towards their associate degree each year.  Students can also participate in the course without participating in the early college program. 

The classroom is located at Byron High School for years 1 and 2.  Students then transition to the Mott Culinary Arts School in Flint to complete their associate degree.

In partnership with Greater Michigan Construction Academy, we are able to offer students a Career & Technical Education experience in electrical.  Students in the two year Electrical Program will be introduced to electrical theory, electrical safety, proper use of tools and equipment, circuits, breakers and fuses, residential wiring, reading electrical blueprints, wiring devices, lighting circuits, conductors and cables, soldering and splicing techniques, low-voltage switching, load calculations, and residential services.  This short video will provide more details.
